Escapade Reminders: Registration, Art Show, DIY Panel Signups, Volunteering

Escapade 29 is right around the corner! Less than 2 weeks until the convention starts, and there are still a few things you can do to get ready.

First, a special note regarding elevator access in the hotel:  If you are planning to commute to the con and will not be staying in the hotel, please let us know and provide us with your full real name, so we can make arrangements with the hotel for your elevator access.  They are less willing than in past years to unlock the elevators during the convention weekend. If you let us know, we can give your name to the hotel, and they will provide you with a special key to use while you’re attending Escapade, so you can access the elevators and reach the con suite. Email us at info@escapadecon.net to make arrangements.

Here are some other things you can do now to prepare for Escapade:

  • Register for the con! Did you know there are still open spots for full weekend or single day memberships? There are!  Not 100% sure you ever actually registered for the con?  Want to make sure your friends are attending?  Please take a moment to review the membership list on the Escapade website to confirm that your own membership is current, and please reach out to your friends if you don’t see them on the list! Use the following links to check registration status for you and your friends, and to register for the con:

Register for Escapade

  • Contribute to the Escapade Art Show! If you have considered bringing art to display or sell at the art show, it’s not too late. If you know you plan to bring art for the show, please register your art ahead of time.  This helps save time for art show staff and volunteers at the con and is much appreciated.  Details about the art show and the link to register your art can be found here:

The Escapade Art Show

  • Sign up for DIY panel slots! The panel schedule has been created based on the votes of the membership, but there are still slots in the schedule for you to revive panels that didn’t make the cut or create new panels that weren’t submitted to the original ballot. Panel slots are assigned on a first come, first served basis, including any slots remaining once the convention is underway. Your panel information must be received by Friday 2/15 to be included in the Escapade program book. Review the panel schedule and follow the instructions on the Escapade panel page now to get your pick of the available slots:

  • Consider volunteering during the con! Escapade is grateful for the enthusiastic assistance of our volunteers throughout each convention. We literally could not do it without you. Please review the Escapade schedule and consider signing up for some volunteer shifts. Visit the volunteer page for more info about volunteering:

Introducing: the Escapade Art Show!

Did you know that Escapade has an Art Show?  Well, we do, and every year we are amazed by the array of unique art representing many different fannish loves.  We set aside a room at the convention on Friday and Saturday to display and admire fanworks brought by the amazing talented and endlessly creative members of the Escapade community.  We welcome all kinds of fan art: drawings, paintings, jewelry, photos, prints, crafts, and works that defy description!

On Sunday morning of the convention, art that has been marked as “for sale” and that has received at least three bids from interested buyers will be auctioned off.  Our amazing auctioneer Shoshanna always puts on a fabulous and entertaining show, enjoyed both by serious art collectors and those who are just in it for the eye candy!

If you are a fanartist (or are willing to pretend to be one), please consider submitting a few pieces to the show!  The more variety, the better!

On-line registration is open until Monday, March 6, 2017.  For those last-minute inspirations, walk-in submissions will be accepted Friday afternoon during art check-in.

Need some ideas?

* Artistic abilities peaked in elementary school? Glitter and construction paper are an under-rated medium! If you had a good time making it, then it belongs in the show!

* Are you a crafter? Clay sculpture, jewelry, dolls – you name it, we want to see it!  All art is valued!

* Are you a cook? Baked goods and preserves with a fannish connection are welcome!

* Not willing to part with the fabulous thing you just made? That’s OK! The art show welcomes art for display only.

* Not enough time before the con? Offer your services to make something for the highest bidder! Just give us a piece of paper explaining what sort of commissions you’re willing to offer (art, vid, gif, etc).  We would be ecstatic to auction off a vidder, er, I mean auction off a vidder’s services.

Panels, panels everywhere!
Now we need more mods!

We have collated the initial list of panels, based on voting by members
like you. Several of the most popular panels need one or more mods to
sign on, in order to make it on to the final schedule. Check out the
panel cut here, and then email us to let us know which you'd like to
moderate or co-moderate.

The Escapade Scholarship Drive

1. Contribute to the Scholarship Fund
The Escapade scholarship works because it's like the rest of Escapade:
you make it work. Your contributions have supported many attendees over
the years, from maintainers of fannish archives, lists, and communities
to fanfic writers and vidders. Scholarships introduce new fans to
Escapade, and bring back long-time attendees who may have fallen on hard
times.

Please donate to the fund. You can contribute by Paypal (to
info@escapadecon.net), by check (made out to Escapade; send to 264 Santa
Monica Way, Santa Barbara, CA 93109), or by pledge via email to
info@escapadecon.net (You must be an attendee to pledge; you can pay
when you arrive at registration.)

Any amount you can give, from $10 to $10,000, helps tremendously. It
helps attendees who couldn't otherwise make it; it helps programming,
because scholarship recipients volunteer and co-moderate panels; it
helps your karma. As always, 100% of your contributions go directly to
recipient expenses like airfare, hotel, and food expenses, if needed.

2. Nominate a Potential Scholarship Recipient
Now it's time to check the registration list at the web site, and
consider who isn't on it. Are they skipping due to unforeseen financial
stresses? It's time to think about a fan who has never been to Escapade
but who you know might love it.

In the same way you create the scholarship fund through donations, you
create the scholarship recipients through nominating people. Go to the
Escapade website: https://escapadecon.net/programming/escapade-scholarship/
and share a little about the scholarship nominee. We will do the rest,
and announce scholarship recipients at the con.

Dance Party (and other things)

First, if you haven't done it, go to escapadecon.net and update your
profile!
Start by logging in, then go to "My Account" and once you're there, click on the "edit your password, badge details, email and photo preferences" link where you can choose to receive notifications direct to your inbox, and if you don't want people taking your photo at the con, you can select that, and it will be part of your badge. Second, if you haven't done it yet, it's time to make your hotel
reservation!
The "Hotel" link on the website will get you where you need to be to do that. Third, and by no means least, help us plan the Opening Night dance party: Friday, join us for Opening Night, Escapade's dance party where we'll boogie to great dance vids and revisit fandoms new and old. Just vidded Hamilton? What about classic Star Trek? Classic Trek to a song from Hamilton? Do you have old MFU vids on DVD that you'd like to send us, or have you just spotted a great MFU movie vid on Youtube? Hoping somebody can find a great X-Files vid to celebrate its return? Let us know in the comments. We'll be selecting the show for diversity of fandoms, diversity of vidders, and good musical flow. We welcome vids of any era, including old VCR vids (provided we can find a high enough quality digital file). We'd love to include more vidders outside of Escapade/Vividcon/Festivids circles whose work the Escapade audience might be missing out on. Let us know about your old favorites and undiscovered gems or just the fandoms you'd love to see included and the songs you'd love to dance to. We're looking for already-released vids that are infectiously booty-shaking with big, beautiful, high-quality files suitable for playing through a projector. (If you've got a new vid in progress, the Saturday night vidshow welcomes your premieres.) Don't be shy: comment and rec us something! We would also like to announce a special art show event:

Trek Art Retrospective
Escapade is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek by hosting a
fandom artwork retrospective. We are looking for fanworks of all sorts
and from all of the Trek verses for display at the art show. Art for
the retrospective will be for display only, not for sale, and will be
returned to the owner after the show. Anyone interested in displaying
their own art or works from their collection at Escapade, please
contact: saklani2@gmail.com If you cannot bring your art and need to
ship it to us, we will need to have it in hand by February 19th.

Submit to the Escapade Art Show!

The Escapade Art Show wants YOU to submit something this year!

art-141211-400x300

Everybody’s got a talent and this is a great way to share the joy! The art show has traditionally hosted some fabulous 2D art and we’d like that to continue! But also, we’d like to encourage an even broader definition of fan art!   The people who attend the convention are a talented group with a wide variety of interests – let’s celebrate!

Need some ideas?

* Artistic abilities peaked in elementary school? Illustrate your OTP using macaroni and crayons! Crack – it’s not just for fanfic anymore!
* Are you a cook? Bake cookies in the shape of Thor’s hammer! Make a booklet of recipes inspired by your favorite show!
* Are you a knitter? Fingerless gloves with the Teen Wolf triskele on them would be awesome! BBC Sherlock’s blue-on-blue strip scarf would be lovely! A beanie hat with Daleks on it would be super cute!
* Do you have a bunch of random film & television magazines lying around? Make a collage celebrating your favorite actors!  We want to see it!  All art is valued!
* Not willing to part with the fabulous thing you just made? That’s OK! The art show welcomes art even if it’s for display only.
